I entered the US Army Oct. 1967, served with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, Vietnam in Company C, 3rd Battalion/ 7th Infantry. I was an infantry squad leader from March to Dec. 1968. I was critically wounded Dec. 6,1968 when two gun shots hit the right side of my head, permanently paralyzing my entire left side and complete visual field loss in both eyes. I was medically retired in Mar. 1969 with a 100% disibility rating. Only now all these years later can I feel proud of my experiences and all that I did and gave.

My cousin CPL James Hensley, US Army, received the Distinguished Service Cross in Korea for actions against the enemy on 19 December 1950. I have talked to my cousin Jimmy many times and we briefly discussed the war in Korea and Vietnam. He never mentioned this award to me once. He is not only our highest decorated Hensley in the family; he is also the most humble. Family members learned of these heroics after his death when his sons discovered his medals and citations. Jimmy received a commission as a Lieutenant and served in combat in the jungles of Viet Nam as a seasoned Korean War Veteran and did very well earning the Bronze Star Medal in that conflict. Jimmy is buried in Clay Co., Kentucky at a small family cemetery in the Appalachian Mountains. He learned how to hunt at a very early age and I am sure this helped him save his buddies from dying and helped him survive on the battlefield as well. He did say that he loved the Army and wanted to stay in but he did not survive the Reduction In Force (RIF) and left the Army as a Captain. I am so proud of Jimmy and I will need to make sure his VA marker is changed. Right now it says BSM and PH with no mention of the DSC. Again, it was because Jimmy was a humble, quiet professional that only wanted to serve his country and that he did. May you rest in the Arms of Jesus Forever. I plan to be buried along side this great warrior and the family as agreed to allow that to happen if space is available for this old Soldier. I have 25+ years in this wonderful Army and will retire in 2013 after 30 years. It has been a great adventure. The thing that I am proud of is that I did not lose a single Soldier in Afghanistan. We had a few close calls, but everyone made it back alive. I am now stationed at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.

PEACE AND THE US VETERAN

“All we are saying is give peace a chance,” a classic line from a John Lennon song. The problem with peace is that it just does not work unless you have the strength to defend your peace and the self control to not use that strength to abuse other’s peace. I believe that man will always want more and if he can get it through non-violent, non-destructive means he will in most cases be satisfied. Cut off his pleasure and his toys and he will be come agitated. Cut off his needs or more correctly his perceived needs and he will resort to violence on other men to get what he feels he must have. You take away my cable TV and I am going to be mad. You take away my food and water and I will kill to get it back. I will kill even quicker if I think you are trying to hurt my family. And did you know that my feelings are not limited to white, northern European descended, Christian Americans? Mess with anyone and the basic fight or flight instinct will kick in. I assume there will always be people out there in the world who will never like me and my kind and I assume that some of those people will always view aggression toward the US as an ongoing and unending process. Other than the 911 attack the US has not suffered a massive man made, deliberate destruction of American life since the Civil War. We live very well and very safe in this country because of our strength and desire for peace. During my 52 years of close contact with the military I have met many a young troop who could not wait to get into combat. Very seldom have I ever had a conversation with a combat veteran who just could not wait to get back to the fight, a veteran who truly enjoyed the danger of close contact with death. Oh, I am sure there are a few strange ones in our society who have some deep seated reason for enjoying the destruction of war but they are not normal. Normal veterans are those men and women who put on the uniform to defend this country in its time of need but cannot wait to get home and be a civilian again as soon as possible. Recently in the media I have heard the question being asked of different age groups, what they feel they owe their country. Sadly many do not feel they owe anything. Now these are the same people who will dial 911 and expect the entire safely net of our emergency responders to be on-call 24 hours a day and at their door in less that three minutes after a cry for help. Why do these people believe they are entitled to so much expensive support from police, fire and EMT responders? Take it another step, why do these people feel they have a right to the defense of their Nations, hometown and personal home by volunteers who put on the uniform of the US military, volunteer soldiers who do give back to their country. Literally as I was writing this column my mother phoned to tell me my uncle had died. He was a WW II combat veteran who fought in France and Germany. He served with very little fanfare, came home and got on with his civilian life. Most people do not even know he was in the Army. I know it though and on Veteran’s Day he was one of the WW II veterans on an ever shrinking list that I always called. There are people who hate us and will always hate us. There will never be a time when the United States does not need some type of military force to defend and protect our way of life. And sadly there will always be those in our society who just cannot see the need to support and give back to this great nation. I will be headed to Iowa from Colorado for a funeral, an American, combat veteran’s funeral. He was lucky he got to come home from his war. We, as a country, were lucky he was willing to “give” back to his nation. It is Veteran’s Day, please thank a veteran for his or her service, for their sacrifice and be thankful there are still Americans who are willing to stand up and be counted to defend our peaceful way of life.

SOMETIMES “YOU” HAVE TO CHARGE THE MACHINE GUN

As an Air Force lieutenant I was sent to Ft. Benning, Georgia and trained to be an Army Infantry officer. During the patrolling phase of training we learned how to set up an ambush and stop the enemy cold as they walked past. But we also learned that the enemy was instructed on how to set up an ambush and we could be caught in their crossfire. If the ambush is laid out and executed correctly and you walk into it, your changes of survival are very slim. One of the tactics we learned was when all else failed as you were being ambushed you have got to charge the enemy’s machine guns. And maybe, just maybe you will disrupt their attack enough to survive the day. Attacking the machine gun (figuratively) was what the passengers attempted on that aircraft flying over Pennsylvania on 911. Yes they died, but they disrupted the enemy enough, that the original target of the Muslim terrorist’s mission was spared death and destruction. Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman, retired Army, has defined people in three categories. Most people are sheep who get on with their daily lives never intending to hurt anyone. Then there are wolves whose very way of life it to prey on the helpless flocks of sheep in our society. Wolves destroy for their basic needs but they also kill for sport. They inflict deliberate destruction of life only for the sake of destroying the weak and the helpless. And then there are the sheepdogs. Sheepdogs are the protectors of the greater society of sheep. In human form they are the military members who elect to join the ranks of the defenders of our American way of life. Policemen are the civilian branch of the defender-sheepdog, brother and sisterhood. The problem with sheepdogs is they can appear to us to look too much like wolves. They have to be that way. One minute they are looking all shaggy and oh so cute you want to pet them and the next minute they are biting off the head of a wolf, which was sneaking up on you, as you failed to pay attention to your surroundings. There is a fear in the flock that the sheepdogs will take advantage of their sheep charges and either try to totally control or bring destruction to parts of the flock. In some nations of the world the sheepdogs are the enemy, this is not however the case in the United States. Unlike most countries our sheep / populace can arm themselves against threats, both foreign and domestic. We live in an emergency / 911 society where we expect to pick up the phone and have the sheepdogs show up in minutes to protect and save us. I once heard a mother call into the Dr. Laura radio show complaining about the fact she did not want her son to have any exposure to firearms. But when she went over to her father-in-law’s house it was the home of a safe gun owner. She felt his ideas were going to wrongly impact her son. Dr. Laura asked whom does the mother call when there is a potential violent situation in her life. Of course the mother stated she called a big burly policeman who has a gun on his hip, who will come and save the day and not take advantage of the weaken state of the citizen who has called for help. The mom wants a sheepdog to save her and her family from harm, but she can not envision her on son or daughter becoming a sheepdog. A grade school teacher was instructing her class that in case of a violent invasion of the class room by a “wolf” the children were to all huddle together on the floor in the corner of the room. Maybe the “wolf” would just go away and not harm the “baby sheep.” A student who was a refugee of the Balkan Wars told the teacher she was wrong. This child had seen the “wolves” up close and personal. He said the class had to escape or fight back with whatever they could use to defend themselves with. Wolves hate sheep that have weapons and the intent to use them. I would suggest that if the students at Virginia Tech had attempted to “charge the machine gun” and disrupt the Korean wolf, fewer student sheep would be dead now. I am an old retired sheepdog but the claws and the fangs stay sharp and I am always watching for the wolves in sheep’s clothing. It is the sixth anniversary of the 911 attack the wolves are still out there.

I am seeking anyone that served in any of the 7 Direct Air Support Flights (DASF units). Please go to this web site: HTTP://WWW.POLKCOUNTY.ORG/VN and have a look. We are trying to reconstruct the various DASF units. This includes names of members of the units, locations, uniform patches if any, time formed up and then closed down and type of areas that you trained in or trained with what Army or Marine units.

There is no recorded history on of any of these units anywhere in any of the military archives. Any help would be appreciated. Pictures and general information is requested. No email address will be given out on the web site to prevent junk email.

=============================

I served in both Korea and Vietnam with the Korean Tiger Division - 1965 - 1966. I was stationed in Vietnam in the QL-19 area between Qui Nhon and Cambodia. I was one of the origional 29 members of the 4th Direct Air Support Flight at Osan AB South Korea. We were TDY everywhere along the DMZ in South Korea. In Vietnam we were on the front lines with the Korean Men. Our job was to support the Koreans in close air support. When in Vietnam I took my orders from the Korean Officer in charge of that operation. Sometimes we had a Bird Dog over head (01-e) but most of the time it was at night and with rain and or low clouds.

Anyone that served with the South Korean Army or Blue Dragon Marines should visit their web site: HTTP://WWW>VIETVET.CO.KR and take a look at both the English and Korean sections. Keep in mind that all links are in English even if you cannot read Korean. The English sections is very interesting.

Hope to hear from anyone that served with one of the DASF units.

Robin

Anyone attached to the Americal Division 856 Class I Platoon of SFC Rodriguez who served from Oct 1967 TO Oct. 1968, pleasr contact me by e-mail. Remember when I was blown off the truck by a Viet 125mm rocket on the night of Tet, we are all lucky to survive the explosion. The rocket exploded inside of the entrance of the yard that we were about to enter. We ran the ice house, and distributed rations to all 31 units of the Americal Division. What an effort to keep the refrigerated refers going after we took them over from the Marines in 67. An to ready the trucks for the convoys that left early in the morning. Loading ice, c-rations, and cold drinks in helicopters for the hill top fire bases. Handling 300 lbs of ice was tough, but we did it.

Good reading, Until I finally grew up, I was busted in rank every time I went to town. But when arriving in Viet Nam I was always given the position as platoon Sgt. Three tours as plt. sgt and plt. ldr. Finally met a wonderful woman while on embassy duty in paris france. Just celebrated our 36th aniverssary, two sons both veterans of the gulf war.

I received 27 personal decorations from viet nam, I was also in cuba with E-2-1 "Oct.62" 3 purple hearts that were awarded. If we soldiers received a purple heart for every time we shed blood in combat, we could fill a shoe box with the damn things. I woukd really like to hear from marines in "B"1/4 3rd. Div. from aug.67 to jan 68. Operation Kentucky. I lost most of my platoon on 6 Dec.67 fighting off a very determined ground attack, I think there were 7or 8 of my men left that could still put up a fight. There was also an air strike that was dropped on our perimeter that night killing and wounding many men. I was med evaced out the next afternoon ,we couldnt get helos in due to the heavy amount of ground fire. First chopper in was shot to bits. One hell of a fight. It was I think, the last large battle of the war. I know it was for me.

God will hold a special place for all the folks that have served and givin there all for the safety and freedom of this great country. I would do the same thing again givin the chance and try to keep my stripes a while longer. I did however retire as a CW-4 left the corps to fly choppers in the army. But as the saying goes "Once a MARINE, always a marine. Semper Fi! God bless and keep you all safe. Bud

I am looking for anyone who served with the 540th Trans in Tuy Hoa anytime between March 1969 to March 1970. Please e-mail or call me at 662-489-3198. I also have a daughter that had Reyes Syndrome and I believe there is a connection between it and agent orange. There were 3 children in the hospital with it at the same time and all of their fathers were in Vietnam and exposed to agent orange. All three were the oldest child in each family.
If any of you Vietnam Veterans have or had children with this disease, please contact me. Thanks so much to whomever is responsible for this website. I have been trying to find a way to contact fellow veterans. I also am suffering with a lot of health problems that I feel were caused by being exposed to agent orange. I had my shoulder laid open with a piece of metal, but there is no record of it in my files. I was treated at the air force hospital in Tuy Hoa. If you have any idea of how I can find them, please contact me.

It is nice to see ur site. i have been a soldier and seen lot of close combat myself but it nice to see u devote so much to this important aspect. the single most essential aspect for success in combat at company level is the character of the comander. he has to lead from the front and should work for success of his team. his own safety will be taken care of if he is high on moral fiber !!

"We buried another veteran today"

We buried another veteran today.
He went to his God, from us, he went away.
This one was young, in the prime of his life.
He left twin children and a very courageous wife.

It wasn’t a bullet, a plane crash or a bomb.
It was cancer, and he just finally, could not hold on.
He fought “it” like a military campaign.
But the time came to surrender, to end his earthly pain.

He knew he would be fine in the presence of his Lord.
But what about his twins, those children he adored?
Will they grow strong and at “life” win.
Please God, let them always remember him.

We buried another veteran today.
It seems, all my life, it has happened this way.
From my uncles of the WW II-time frame.
To the military friends, Vietnam would claim.

For me the number of dead, is always on the rise.
When I get a call another veteran is gone, it is never really a surprise.
From lost sub-mariners, in early days of my life.
To the forever gone, military-medical friends of my veteran wife.

I lost a Korean War veteran friend this year, to a crashed airplane.
I lost a Gulf War friend to cancer, a difference in their age, but still that pain.
I lost an Uncle to cancer who did Korea with the Navy, steaming off shores.
I lost my father-in-law who fought in Korea, from a “fox-hole” in the frozen outdoors.

We buried another Veteran today.
It seems in all my family’s generations, it happens this way.
From my Revolutionary War Grandfathers who started this sad, but needed trend.
To the family members on both sides in 1861, who just would not bend.

Some of my family lived a long and happy life, after “their” war.
They died of old age in their bed, safe-behind a locked door.
They died in battle, buried where they fell.
They died years later, carrying emotional scars, in their own personal hell.

My family is no different than thousands who met our Nation’s call.
They rose to the demands of this country and some gave their “all”.
We have to continue doing this, to make America free.
But, it’s that Veteran’s twin-little children that keeps worrying me.

We buried another Veteran today.
It seems all my life it continues this way.
Now my only child is nine and we reside on a military installation.
My wife and I truly want her to live safe, in a free nation.

But what happens, when it is her-generation’s turn to make a stand.
Do we lose our only child in some forsaken-foreign land?
Does she play it safe, stay home and say “that’s boy’s stuff”.
Or does she join like her mother and go right into the ruff.

She has to be that one Veteran I don’t see, make that final “call”.
Let me go before her, let me first give this country my fighting “all”.
Maybe if I go “out-there” and make my final stand.
She can stay safe-at-home, in this wonderful free land.

We buried another Veteran today.

Enjoy very much your website and newsletter. Since leaving the Army in 1965 (after years and seven months), I worked in the corporate world. I recently commented to a friend of mine that after 35 years there is one thing I know as as absolute fact. Working with men who have been in the armed forces is much easier than working with those who have not. Those who have understand leadership, discipline, and teamwork. I work in a department that has six men and three women. All six of us guys are ex-military and five of the six are Viet vets. The women even notice how smooth this department works compared to others. Just some thought guys - pass on if you desire.

Thanks...John Myles

Eleven paratroopers received Silver Stars that day including Col. Anthony McAuliffe. Dad was killed in Holland 6 Oct 1944 after being taken prisoner. His remains were not found until Dec 1971 by Karel Huibers a Dutch tree farmer. There is a monument and plaque honoring him and five others in Opheusden, The Netherlands. Dad has always been my hero. Fred Bahlau said that Dad was the most natural soldier he had ever known. Dad had three children, Sharon, Ronald and Rodney. ANY SITE THAT HAS ANY THING TO DO WITH OUR ARMED FORCES SHOULD BE READ BY ALL . I AM SURE WHETHER YOU ARE ARMY, MARINES OR WHAT THESE SITES ARE THE BEST HISTORY LESSON ANY ONE COULD EVER READ.

I WAS AWARDED THE C.I.B, THE SILVER STAR TWO BRONZE STARS ONE WITH A "V" FOR HEROIC ACHEVEMENT AGAINST THE ENEMY FORCES IN KOREA. I ALSO HAVE TWO PURPLE HEARTS. AND A LOT MORE RIBBONS INCLUDING THE CROSS OF GALENTRY FROM THE VIET NAM WAR. I SERVED IN BOTH. I HAVE ASKED ST.LOUIS FOR A COMPLETE COPY OF ALL MY MEDALS BUT THEY TELL ME ALL MY RECORDS WERE BURNT UP IN A FIRE IN 1973. I AM LUCKY AS I HAVE MY OLD FORM 20 AND IT SHOW'S MOST ALL OF THEM.

I am a D-day veteran of the 29th Field Artillery Battalion which together with our 8th Infantry Regiment made up the 8th Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division. I was a combatant in the five major campaigns in Western Europe during WW II.

I am no hero in the conventional use of that term. I was lucky to have been in the vicinity of many places where terribly bitter battles were going on and I survived and am still surviving so I feel obligated to correct many misimpressions that people might have about WW II in Western Europe. Most of those faulty impressions are garnered from depictions by historians and other writers about that war.

The major failure is that the people chronicling that war seem to have favorite units and personalities and they detail the accomplishments of those whom they favor and pay scant attention to the contributions of many worthy but unheralded units and the soldiers who comprised those units

I am not a combat leader, I am not a combat veteran, I am only a veteran of a combat zone. I have only known the surprise and fear of sporadic rocket and artillery fire, not the job of preparing to walk into combat like the grunts. I have known and befriended many combat veterans in my 20 years of military service and have admired their leadership. I have come to the conclusion that if they were a good combat leader, they were a good leader before combat and that combat just made them better.

I have been and will always be in awe of those who took charge and got the job done when the chaos of war ruled and they refused to join the chaos.

It is the men that are willing to walk into the face of death that keep us Free!
